Perimeter
When thinking of the perimeter of a shape, think about around the shape. The perimeter of a shape is the TOTAL distance around the shape.
TOTAL is a key word that tells us we must add.
Activity
- Kids draw a square then take one finger and drag it along all the lines. That’s the perimeter.
- Now let’s add 5cm to each side. Drag your finger again on all the lines of the square this time let’s add the numbers we see.
5cm + 5cm + 5cm + 5cm = 20cm
Or
Because a square has all 4 equal sides we can also say
5cm x 4 = 20cm
